The purpose of Sundace's presention is to educate and raise awareness on the trauma and critical stress our first responders endure on a daily basis Sundance's Biography Sundance Scardino was born in Cleveland, Ohio. Raised in Northern California. Joined the United States Air Force after high school. Served during Desert Storm. Deployed to Saudi Arabia for Operation Southern Watch. Worked with NASA on multiple launches as part of the Space Shuttle recovery team. Completed his first active duty enlistment and became a traditional guardsman in the California Air National Guard 129th Rescue Wing out of Moffett Federal Airfield. He successfully navigated the year long hiring process for Los Angeles County Firefighter Department and served the citizens of Los Angeles for 8 years. Eventually returning to the Silicon Valley Sundance and became a firefighter/paramedic for The City of San Jose. After his family situation changed he came back to the California Air Guard after a 13 year break. Taking a military leave of absence from the fire department Sundance attended the Pararescue apprenticeship course. 3 months after graduation Sundance deployed to Afghanistan conducting combat rescue and recovery missions as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. Sundance sustained a career ending back injury while parachuting into the Pacific Ocean over 950 miles off shore during a civilian rescue mission. Now Sundance is medically retired from the military after serving for over 14 years. Sundance returned to the fire department and is on modified duty in a special assignment with the fire department serving as the Behavioral Health Program’s Coordinator.

Last June 2017; 49 Rotary Clubs (the most ever) sent 196 youth to the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program! Young people from all over the district in 2018 will come together for a week of leadership training. In addition to attending skills modules and activity workshops, campers built friendships and strengthen bonds within the Rotary Youth family. The 2018 camp will take place from June 24-29 again at Mission Springs |

Annual Presidential Debunking Dinner

The Rotary year is from July 1 through June 30. This means that on June 30, the club's presidency will transition from Suzanne to next year's President, Andrew Howard. There is a Rotary tradition that there be a dinner at which we celebrate the outgoing President's sucessful year and welcome the incoming president. It is also time to have some fun and typically members put on a skit that features some lighthearted fun at the expense of the outgoing President. This year the skit will review some of the formative experiences that have made Suzanne the person we know today. This event is for members and their guests only. Members are encouraged to have family and friends join them for what is always a happy event.

It is DEBUNKING TIME, otherwise known as TIME TO CELEBRATE SUZANNE'S SUCCESSFUL PRESIDENTIAL YEAR.
The Rotary year runs from July 1 through June 30, which means that President Suzanne's term is nearly over. It is a Rotary tradition that the last meeting of the year be an dinner event that recognizes the outgoing presidents successes (and maybe a few goofs) and welcomes the incoming President - in our case Andrew Howard.
A regular feature of our club's debunking dinner is a lighthearted skit that makes a little fun at the expense of the outgoing president. This year's skit will review some of the formative experiences that have made Suzanne the person we know today.

Dr. Larry Gerston specializes on the U.S. public policy process at the national and state levels. He has written twelve books, focusing on a “hands on,” user-friendly approach to politics and government. Gerston’s most recent book, Reviving Citizen Engagement: Policies to Renew National Community (Taylor & Francis, publisher) examines the loss of political attachment in the United States, explains the costs to society, and offers solutions for making America whole again. Among his other books at the national level, Gerston has penned Confronting Reality: Ten Issues Threatening American Society and How We Can Fix It (2009) and American Federalism: A Concise Introduction (2007). His Public Policymaking in a Democratic Society: A Guide to Civic Engagement (second edition, 2008) has been heralded as a breakthrough in hands on/service learning partnerships and referenced in several developing democracies. With respect to California, Gerston has written Not So Golden After All: The Rise and Fall of California (2012), which explores California politics in the context of a complicated, contentious socio-economic environment. His California Politics and Government: A Practical Approach (with Terry Christensen), is now in its thirteenth edition (2015) and the best-selling text in its category. Previously, Gerston and Christensen teamed up to write other books, including Recall! California’s Political Earthquake, winner of the prestigious CHOICE award. Along with his academic responsibilities, Gerston appears each week as the political analyst at NBC Bay Area (the NBC television station in northern California). He has also appeared on NBC Nightly News, CBS Evening News, CNN, PBS, and BBC. Mindy Berkowitz has been Executive Director of Jewish Family Services of Silicon Valley (JFS SV) since 2003 – and still claims it’s the best job she ever had. Mindy earned a BA in Sociology and Certificate in Women’s Studies from Rutgers University, prior to receiving a Masters in Jewish Communal Service from Hebrew Union College and a Masters in Social Work from Washington University. Before working at JFS SV, Mindy enjoyed an extensive nonprofit management career in mental health, camping and youth services. Mindy lives with her husband, Rabbi Allan Berkowitz in San Jose, CA. Mindy and Allan have four children and one grandson. Refugee Crisis: JFS SV protects and supports refugees who have experienced persecution due to their religion, ethnicity, political expression or sexual orientation. They come from Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Russia, other eastern European countries and various countries throughout Africa. The people we help are fleeing dire and often violent circumstances. As the second largest refugee resettlement agency in Santa Clara County, JFS SV serves 200+ refugees annually with resettlement, pro-bono legal immigration clinic, vocational English training, job search assistance, case management, and emergency food assistance. Our services to refugees have been funded through HIAS, County of Santa Clara, United Way Silicon Valley, Silicon Valley Community Foundation, other foundations and generous individuals. |

Drivers, most of whom are volunteers, deliver hot, nutritious meals five days a week, sometimes with the option of a once-a-week frozen meal. |

Kathleen Wortham, or Kat, is the Housing & Health Policy Associate at the Leadership Group. Her work focuses largely on health care law reform, advancing public health initiatives and workplace wellness, and advocating for affordable housing through policy and community representation. Before becoming an Associate, Kat was a coordinator at the Leadership Group on the Housing portfolio where she spearheaded the 2017 Affordable Housing Tour and championed advocacy efforts for the Leadership Group on three high density, mixed-use housing developments in the South Bay. Kat earned her B.S. in Psychology from Dominican University of California in 2016. Her future goals include obtaining a J.D. and working on criminal justice reform. In her spare time, Kat enjoys hiking across the Bay Area and travelling as much as possible. |

He has since been managing Darling & Fischer Family Mortuaries and Los Gatos Memorial Park. He is an active member in the Campbell community and belongs to Campbell Chamber of Commerce. The Mission of the Veterans Memorial & Support Foundation is to: Build and Maintain a tribute to U.S. Military Members and Veterans MICHAEL FRANGADAKIS, BOARD DIRECTOR Michael Frangadakis is a Vietnam Vet who served in the 44th Medical Brigade in the highlands of Vietnam. Today he continues service to America through his active reserve duty in the California State Military Reserve where he earned the Non-Commission Officer of the Year Award. Mike serves as a Sergeant First Class in charge of recruiting and retention in Northern California. He is currently the National Guard and Veteran Affairs Commissioner for Santa Clara County, the current President of the West Valley Advisory Board of the Red Cross and the President of the Veterans Memorial & Support Foundation of Los Gatos. Mike has a career steeped in real estate. With over three decades in the industry, Mike has served as broker, licensed and certified appraiser and CEO of his own business, Realty World - Frangadakis Corporation. His expertise in real estate and appraisals is often called upon for court expert witness requests in the state of California and earned him selection into the Realtors Hall of Fame. Mike has been extensively involved with his community. He serves on the Certified Community Emergency Response Team, is a member of the Saratoga Men's Club, Pan Cretan and the St. Nicolas Greek Orthodox Church. He has been a Los Gatos Rotarian since '78 in which he chairs their Operation Yellow Ribbon Program supporting the Fisher House and Poly Trauma Center of the Palo Alto VA. Once a month our Rotarians prepare food and serve those in need at Saint Luke's church in Los Gatos. This program was actually started back in the 1990's when one of our Rotarians saw a need to provide Food and Shelter for the Homeless. Today Saint Luke's church not only partners with our club, but others who help fund this on-going program. They serve every Tuesday at 10am. Rotarians are encouraged to serve and talk with those recieving the food. |

As a member of Santa Cruz Downtown Toastmasters, she speaks about conserving water and energy at the home. In her prior career, she managed information technology implementation projects. Chie Kawahara received a bachelor of arts degree in economics from University of Hawaii and a masters of business administration degree from San Francisco State University.
