Marty Fishman shared the sad news of the passing of Don d’Arms. Don was an active and valued member of Los Gatos Rotary for many years, had kept in touch with the club after recently moving away, and will be missed. He was also the skilled editor of the club’s Cat Tale (this publication) for many years.

Marty Fishman also announced that The Rotary Foundation Annual Fund Drive continues.  We would like to reach $35,000 and 100% Club Member participation.
 

Tina Orsi-Hartigan announced that the Blankets for Kittens project with Los Gatos High School Interact Club went well. The blankets will be donated to the Nike Animal Rescue Foundation.

Lisa Norcia-Cheskin announced that the Christmas Giving Tree project is continuing and our goal is to donate 100 gifts, so far we have 18. You can shop yourself and bring the gifts to meetings or the Presidents’ Brunch or you can shop online using the link on our Club website.

Tom Boyce announced a reminder about the Presidents’ Brunch coming up on December 1 at La Rinconada.
Gordon Levin announced that the Club will be participating in the annual Los Gatos Holiday Parade. If you would like to participate, please let Gordon or Amy Potts know ahead of time. Details can be found on the Club website.

Tina Orsi-Hartigan announced a reminder about the Star Wars movie fundraiser. It will take place on December 20 at the Los Gatos downtown movie theater and will benefit Ronald McDonald House and the Lucille Packard Foundation. We have already sold half of the tickets and the link for tickets will go live to the public on November 26.

Marty Fishman announced that free admission tickets to the Computer History Museum will remain available until the end of the year.

Patti van der Burg announced that wine donations for the January 25, 2020 CrabFest will be accepted starting next week and that brochures with information on last week’s speaker regarding audio tours of Los Gatos are on each table.

Next week’s Speaker will be Larry Stone, Tax Assessor for Santa Clara County.

Andrew Howard thanked the Club for the thank-you gift of the flight onboard Gordon’s plane and lunch in Monterey. He also mentioned that his brother is currently featured in Forbes magazine. Marty will send out a link to the article.
Lisa Norcia-Cheskin shared that she will be moving from Los Altos to become a resident of Los Gatos starting on December 1.

Avis shared that she and David recently went on a trip to New York where they took in the sites before going on a fall-foliage tour and finishing the trip in Quebec.

Henry Vitkovich and his wife went on a trip to China where they experienced many sites including the Great Wall, the Terracotta Army and a large police presence. $50 to the general fund.

Tina Orsi-Hartigan shared that their wine making season is over and it was exhausting!

John Pencer would like to donate $20 on behalf of Henry Vitkovich’s recent birthday and reduction in insurance premiums.

Dan Snyder shared that his daughter will soon be turning 16 and he will donate $100 because she does not want to become a driver and he will be saving a lot of money because of it.

John Colwell had a good poker game with some fellow Rotarians and will be donating the $80 he won to the scholarship fund.
 
 
Speaker
Shawn Noren, Ph.D. a Marine Mammal Biologist with the Institute of Marine Science, UC Santa Cruz.  Shawn shared information about the impact of global climate change on marine mammals. Specifically, she shared the research she had completed relating to walruses and their loss of habitat due to the massive reduction in sea-ice.
 
Marty thanked Shawn by donating 50 inoculations in her name.
