Meeting was held online via Zoom and called to order at 12:30pm by Marty Fishman
 
We had 60 Zoom participants
 
Pledge of Allegiance was led by Marty Fishman.  Marty also made note of yesterday being Memorial Day.

Other Visitors – Katie Westin and Sol Otero from Leigh High School Interact Club.
 
Inspiration – Gary Allison provided a light-hearted and humorous inspiration.

 

Announcements

Marty Fishman announced that we will be offering Zoom breakout sessions starting at noon before each weekly meeting so that small groups can meet online. Doug Brent will help set them up if you are interested.
 
Marty reminded the Club to make their donations to the Polio Plus Campaign.
 
Leigh High School Interact Club: Doug Brent introduced Katie Westin and Sol Otero, co-Presidents of the Club. The ladies discussed that their Club is rebounding this year from a tough year last year. They are increasing service activities and membership. Projects have included Rise Against Hunger and Rebuilding Together. They have also made individual Holiday cards for patients of a local Alzheimer facility. They thanked Rotary for their scholarships and the opportunities that our Club has provided them through Interact. Interact gave them something to look forward to and the chance to do something bigger than themselves. They appreciated the opportunity to attend RYLA and ELC.
 
Jamie Hekkelman presented her Red Badge Bio.
 
For those that need to attend another Club’s meeting to move from Red to Blue, Marty provided a reminder of our neighboring Club’s meeting dates and times.
 
COVID-19 Shelter-in-Place continues. Numbers are going down in our County and there have been no new deaths. There are three places to go in Santa Clara County for testing.
 
Carol Abela is continuing to Chair the Buddies program during the Shelter-In-Place.
 
Manizheh Zand spoke about My Mentor Tree, a non-profit organization that teaches young children about the field of engineering. John Sze spoke about their different projects with local schools and universities. They also collaborate with Catholic Charities through their CORAL/STEM Program.
 
Contact Dick Conrad, Service Project Chair if you are interested in community volunteering. A list of service project opportunities was presented. Volunteers are still needed for tomorrow’s Red Cross Blood Drive.
 
“Rotarian at Work” t-shirts are available from Marty and Rotary masks are available from Tina.

The Board of Directors will be presenting their recommendation for Rotary International 2022-2023 President.
 
The 2020 Rotary Virtual Convention will be held June 20-26, 2020.
 

Presentation

Our speakers today were Mike Potter and Brian Mendenhall from the Santa Clara County Water District. They discussed the District’s programs that are in place to ensure clean, reliable water to the 2 million residents in our County. They broke their priorities down into 6 sections:
Priority A: Ensure a safe, reliable water supply for the future.
Priority B: Reduce toxins and hazards in our waterways.
Priority C: Protect our water supply from earthquakes and natural disasters.
Priority D: Restore wildlife habitat and provide open space.
Priority E: Provide flood protection to homes, businesses, school and highways.
Priority F: Support public health and public safety for our community
 
They also help clean out homeless encampments to keep our waterways clean and safe.
